砦を守る結界を貫いて侵入してくるコノエの気配を、　ひしひしと感じる。
He felt the sign of Konoe invading through the boundaries protecting his fortress.

彼らを出迎える者たちを退けることができれば、　いずれこの場所に辿り着くはずだ。
If he could repel those cats sent out to meet him, Konoe would reach this place sooner or later.

対面の瞬間を思い描いて、　仮面の下の唇はいびつな笑みを刻む。
Imagining the moment of their meeting, the lips under his mask formed a twisted smile.

――だがそこへ、　コノエとはまた別の存在の気配が割り込んできた。
- But there, the sign of another existence had caused a disturbance, along with Konoe.

予期しなかったわけではなかった。　それはとても馴染み深い存在でもあった。
It wasn't unexpected. It was also a very familiar presence.

まさかこうも簡単に現れるとは思わなかったが。

呟く声には心なしか、ほんのわずかに苦みがあった。

リークスの前に、ある影が姿を現す。
In front of Leaks, a shadow appeared.

進み出たのは――歌うたいの猫だった。
Stepping forward - it was the Poet.

歌うたいはリークスから顔を背けて、　物言わぬ彫像のようにじっと佇んでいる。
The Poet turned his face away from Leaks and stood still, like a silent statue.

「……シュイ」
"... Shui."

その名を口にするのは、　果たしてどれほどぶりのことなのか。
How long had it been since he had said that name?

シュイ――　それが、歌うたいの名前だった。
Shui - it was the name of the Poet.

名を呼ばれた猫が、顔を上げてリークスを直視する。
The cat whose name was called raised his face, and met Leaks's gaze.

いつもは頭部を覆う布の影に隠さている目元がちらりと覗く。　その眼差しは厳しく、けれど強い憂いを帯びてもいた。
The eyes peeped out from the shadow of the cloth perpetually covering his head. His eyes were severe in their look, but were also tinged with strong sorrow.

「未練がましいな。何をしにここへ来た」
You don't know when to give up. Why did you come here?

「リークス。……もうやめるんだ」
"Leaks... Stop this already."

「……フフ」
"... Heheh."

苦渋の滲む

シュイの声に、リークスは嘲りの笑いを返す。
Leaks returned Shui's distressed words with a sardonic laugh.

「お前にそんなことを言われる筋合いはないな。一刻も早くこの場を立ち去れ」
"You have no grounds on which to say such a thing. Hurry and get away from this place."

「君は……思い違いをしている。あの日から、ずっと」
"You're... acting on a misunderstanding. Since that day, you always have."

「知らんな。　聞きたくもない」
"I don't need to know that. Nor do I care to hear it."

「リークス、　あの時私は……！」
"Leaks, back then, I---!"

「黙れ」
"Hold your tongue!"

食い下がるシュイを前にして、はじめてリークスの声に苛立ちが滲む。
In front of Shui's persistence, irritation blotted for the first time in Leaks's voice.

「罠にはめられたとでも言うつもりだろう？　……愚かな。結託して、出世の邪魔になった私を亡きものにしようとしたのだろう」
"Will you try to say that you were framed by a trap? ... Foolish. Seeing that I would interfere with your promotion, you conspired to have me killed."

「……違う！」
"You're wrong!"

「違わんな。私の居場所は、お前しか知らなかったのだから」
"I'm not wrong. Because only you were familiar with my whereabouts."

頑ななリークスの拒絶にもめげずに、　シュイは辛抱強く先を続ける。
Without quailing at Leaks's stubborn rejection, Shui continued patiently.

「君は闇の魔術師などではない。そんなもの、昔も今も、未知なるものへの恐れが生んだ醜い風聞だ。それは私が一番よく知っている。なのにそんな君を、どうして私が……」
"You are not a dark sorcerer. Something like that, even now, is an ugly rumour born from ignorance and fear. I know that best. Nevertheless, why, I... "

「たとえお前がそうだったとしても、周りは違う。祇沙の……特に藍閃の猫からは、私は煙たがられていたようだったからな。私も、そんな世界を厭うていた」
"Even if that's so with you, others are different. Shisa... especially from the cats in Ransen, avoid me. And their world, I hate."


「リークス……！」
"Leaks...!"

「黙れ。今さらだ。お前の言葉で過去が変わるわけでもない」
Hold your tongue. It's too late. The past won't change with your words."

「……確かに、私は君にそう思われても仕方がないことをした。だが……、……この世界を変えるという目論みも全て、……私のせいなのだろう？」
"... Certainly, I cannot help it if you think so... But, this plan of changing the world entirely... This is all because of me?"

ほんの一瞬、けれどためらうような沈黙が訪れる。
Silence visited for just a moment.

だが、再びリークスが投げかけたのは、　先と変わらぬ嘲りの言葉だった。
But Leaks retorted again, with his unchanged sneer.

「うぬぼれるな。ただ、お前からは色々と学ぶことがあった。絆や信頼、そういった目に見えぬ不確かなものがどれだけもろく、愚かしいことであるかをな」
"Don't be conceited. However, I did learn from you in numerous ways. Ties and trust, just how fragile and uncertain they are. Their folly."

「…………」
"..."

「絆、信頼。感情などというくだらないものが足を引っ張るから、ややこしくなる。だったらそんなもの、なくしてしまった方がいい」
"Bonds, trust. Because something as trivial as feeling becomes an obstruction, it only complicates matters. It's better to have lost it."

「……そうじゃない！」
"... It is not so!"

シュイは眉を潜め、どこか切ない表情で声を荒げた後、何かを飲み込むように唇を噛みしめた。
After frowning and raising his voice, Shui chewed at his lip with a sad expression, as if to swallow something.

「……リークス。……あの時の気持ちは、嘘じゃなかったんだ。本当に」
"... Leaks. My feelings back then, they were no lie. Believe me."

「黙れ」
"Shut up."

もう幾度目になるかもわからない拒絶。シュイは俯いて、それからふたたびリークスの真意を質すかのように、仮面の奥の瞳を直視した。
Leaks didn't know how many more times he would reject him. Shui's head bowed, looking to the eyes behind the masked face, as if to ascertain Leaks's true intention.

「そこまで私を拒むなら、どうして……コノエをすぐに殺さなかった？　にっくきこの私の、息子だろう」
"If you refuse me this far, why... did you not kill Konoe swiftly? He's my accursed son, isn't he?"

「すぐに殺してしまったのではつまらんだろう。じわじわと苦痛を与えなければ、意味がない」

「だとしても、今この時まで待つ必要はなかった。どの道、君は闇の力を手にするつもりだったんだろう？　それなら、何故……」

わずかな沈黙の後、リークスは平坦な声で答えた。
After a brief silence, Leaks answered.

「コノエはただの『感情の器』ではない。お前の賛牙としての能力を受け継いだ、特殊な存在だ。だから……どこまで持ちこたえられるのか、試してみたかっただけだ。ただ、それだけのことだ」
"Konoe is not just the 'container of feelings'. His existence is special, since he has inherited the ability you had as a Sanga. Therefore... I wanted only to see how long he would hold out. That is all."

なおも言い返そうとするシュイを、リークスが片手を上げて遮る。
In addition, Leaks raised his hand to shut out Shui's reply.

「さて、くだらない話はここまでだ。いよいよ時が迫っている。シュイよ、所詮お前には何もできん。魂だけの存在なのだからな。もう何もかもが遅いのだ。祇沙は滅び、新たな世界として生まれ変わる」
"This is all trivial talk. The time finally approaches. Shui, after all, you can do nothing. Only your soul exists. Everything is already too late. Sisa will die, and be reborn as a new world."

"..."

シュイはもうそれ以上は何も言わずに、　ただ哀しげにかぶりを振った。
Shui said nothing more, though his head shook sadly.

と、その姿は陽炎のようにゆらめいて色味を失い、　やがて透き通って消えていった。
The figure wavered like a flickering heat haze, became transparent, and finally disappeared.
